Céline Wright is a Paris-based designer whose work explores the relationship between light, nature, and space. Guided by a poetic and deeply intuitive approach, she creates sculptural lighting that brings a sense of softness, movement, and quiet presence to an interior.
Drawing inspiration from clouds, organic forms, and the shifting qualities of natural light, Wright conceives each piece as an atmospheric element—one that does not simply illuminate a space, but subtly transforms the way it is experienced. Her work is distinguished by an elegant simplicity and a sensitivity to proportion, allowing her creations to feel at once ethereal, architectural, and timeless.
Craft
Céline Wright’s practice brings together an exacting artisanal process and a distinctly contemporary approach to form. Each light is entirely shaped by hand in her studio in France, through a slow and meticulous process that demands precision, patience, and an intimate understanding of the material.
Her signature cloud-like forms are composed of more than two thousand individual strips of washi paper. Applied one by one with a brush, each band is carefully layered and shaped to gradually build the volume, texture, and translucency of the finished piece. The process unfolds over countless hours, requiring an almost meditative concentration and leaving little distance between the maker’s hand and the final object.
No two pieces emerge exactly alike. Subtle variations inherent to the material and the gesture of the artisan give each fixture its own character, transforming light into a sculptural presence that feels both ethereal and deeply handmade.
Through this balance of repetition, precision, and intuition, Wright preserves the sensitivity of traditional handcraft while giving it a resolutely contemporary architectural expression.
Material
Céline Wright’s work is deeply rooted in a reverence for natural materials and the traditions that shape them. At the heart of her practice is washi, a remarkable Japanese paper whose quiet beauty belies its exceptional strength and versatility.
Prized for its luminous white tone, delicate texture, and extraordinary lightness, washi possesses qualities still little known in the Western world. Both durable and translucent, it allows light to pass softly through its fibers, creating an atmospheric glow while making it possible to conceive fixtures of impressive scale with an almost weightless presence.
Its apparent fragility is part of its poetry. Supple yet resilient, washi responds naturally to movement and time, bringing warmth, softness, and a subtle sense of imperfection to each piece. In Wright’s hands, this centuries-old material becomes both structure and light, a meeting of traditional savoir-faire and contemporary form.
InTOYo Collection
Born from research inspired by a residency at the Villa Kujoyama in Japan, InTOYo is a pendant light that combines the refined elegance of Japanese culture with Celine Wright’s artistic sensibility. This luminaire is crafted from Kozo paper, a delicate yet durable material derived from the mulberry tree, traditionally used in Japanese craftsmanship for its unique texture and exceptional lightness.
